Kiwirrkurra lies 150km further west from Kintore over the WA border and is described as the most remote community in Australia. The community is 700km west of Alice Springs and 1,200km east of Port Headland in the tali or sandhill country of the Gibson Desert, south west of Wilkinkarra/Lake McKay. With a population of about 200 people, mostly Pintupi speaking with close family ties to Ngaanaytjarra communities, Kiwirrkurra has a School, Indigenous Ranger Program, Art Centre, Health Clinic and Store.

Kiwirrkurra artists contributed to the Western Desert Dialysis Appeal auction in 2000 to help their Kintore neighbours receive a dialysis chair. The Kiwirrkurra Dialysis Unit is part of the Kiwirrkurra Clinic, with the first dialysis taking place on 6th August 2014.

Purple House are lucky enough to have had the old clinic renovated into a nurse’s house by our tireless and ever-enthusiastic friends from Woden Rotary. For the first few years, the Kiwirrkurra unit had no government funding and was operated through philanthropy, fundraising, donations and support from Ngaanyatjarra Health and Papunya Tula Artists.
