Lajamanu is a vibrant Warlpiri community located on the northern edge of the Tanami Desert, 557km south west of Katherine and 875km south of Darwin. The community has a population of about 750 people with a School, Health Clinic, Police Station, Library, Water Park, Warnayaka Art Centre and Store. Lajamanu is in the tropics and experiences a wet and dry season.
Kurra Aboriginal Corporation initially funded Purple House to complete feasibility and scoping studies and the Lajamanu Progress Association generously donated $250,000 to help the project. Purple House secured $2.366 million dollars through ABA and built a 2 chair dialysis unit and nurse accommodation in the community.
The first dialysis at the Lajamanu Dialysis Unit took place on 27th May 2013 and the unit was officially opened by the people of Lajamanu in August 2013. The unit is coordinated by the Panuku Office in Darwin.
