Umoona or Coober Pedy is a town located 680 km south of Alice Springs and 850 km north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway. Known as the “Opal Capital of the World”, Umoona is on Antakirinja Matu-Yunkunytjatjara Country. With a population of about 2,000 people, the town welcomes approximately 150,000 tourists each year.

In June 2024, Purple House opened a four-chair dialysis unit in Umoona. This wouldn’t have been possible without the help of many community members, philanthropists, organisations and the SA and Commonwealth Governments.

“Dialysis saves lives. This new renal dialysis unit in Coober Pedy means people can stay on Country surrounded by family and get the essential, consistent treatment and care they need without having to travel vast distances.” Assistant Minister Malarndirri McCarthy

The Coober Pedy dialysis clinic is now surrounded by a beautiful native garden and the front fence displays a community art project thanks to funding from BHP.
