Innovation and Sustainability

Ngurra (Country) is at the heart of everything we do.

Whether it’s getting people home on Country or increasing the sustainability of our operations, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and responding to the challenges of climate change.

Our latest strategic goal focuses on sustainably ensuring we continue to innovate in remote healthcare delivery while caring for Country, water, and community.

“It is so important for cultural knowledge holders to access Country and be able to do all those things that fill their cup. Purple House patients are knowledgeable about Country and keen to share that with their family and if Purple House wasn’t here, they (their families) would lost that opportunity to learn about Country.”

Driving a Greener Future

5 Nissan LEAF EVs powered by solar energy

Our growing fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) is charged using Australian-made solar chargers, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and lowering our emissions.

POWERING PURPLE HOUSE WITH THE SUN

35.408 tonnes of CO2 saved

since the installation of our solar panels in Alice Springs.

And we’re just getting started, with more solar panels being installed at remote sites soon.

Innovative Water Solutions for Remote Dialysis

330,600 Litres of water saved in 2024/25

Dialysis is a water intensive treatment – a challenge when you’re working in some of Australia’s driest regions where communities have poor-quality or undrinkable water quality.

In response, Purple House developed an innovative reverse osmosis system that recycles dialysis water and purifies contaminated water for medical use.

Award-Winning Innovation

✔️ 2022 – Michael Smith was awarded Australian Water Association Research & Development Excellence Award for developing the innovative reverse osmosis system.

We are currently piloting this technology at three sites, with plans to expand its use across our network.

Environmental and Sustainability Working Group

Purple House now has a dedicated Environmental and Sustainability Working Group who are developing an environmental sustainability plan that looks to; reduce our carbon footprint, increase renewable energy use and water efficiency, design infrastructure, which is smarter and more sustainable and actively respond to the impacts of climate change.

Coober Pedy Native Garden Project

As part of our commitment to environmental sustainability we have planted a vibrant native garden at our Coober Pedy clinic for patients, staff and community to enjoy.

The garden features Irmangka Irmangka bush medicine plants, a beautiful ceramic birdbath made by our patient ceramic group and lots of low maintenance native trees and shrubs.
