Primary Health Care

Primary Health Care at Purple House Northside

Located on the Stuart Highway, Braitling in Alice Springs, Purple House Northside is a dedicated Primary Health Care (PHC) clinic supporting Purple House patients and their families who have had to dislocate to Alice Springs for dialysis treatment.

A Space for Healing and Connection

Purchased in 2020 to accommodate the expansion of our Primary Health Care services, the clinic was once an old GP practice. But when our Directors first saw the space, they had a different vision:

We don’t want a waiting room – we’re sick of waiting for things. We want a gym!

So instead of a traditional waiting area, we created a space for movement and wellbeing, complete with a boxing bag, bike machine, and parallel bars.

Purple House Northside has become a space where patients can get a cuppa or toastie, have a shower, do some exercise, sit around the fire, cook damper or kangaroo tails while they wait to see a GP, nurse or allied health professional. The team also run weekly ladies and men’s exercise classes as well as health education and wellbeing days.

Our Vision for Primary Health Care

We are committed to keeping patients strong, independent, and well enough to return to Country safely. Our holistic approach ensures:

    • Optimal health and wellbeing for dialysis patients.
    • Empowerment through education, so patients can make informed decisions about their health.
    • Support for transplant workups, providing guidance and care for eligible patients.
    • Collaborative care planning, where nurses, allied health professionals, GPs, specialists, and patients work together.
    • Recognition of the complex determinants of health, addressing physical, mental, social, emotional, spiritual, and cultural needs.

Care Coordination: Navigating the Healthcare System

In addition to clinical consults, our PHC Nurses and Aboriginal Health Practitioners (AHPs) are responsible for coordinating the health care needs of an identified group of haemodialysis patients. The role was created to ensure that high risk patients with multiple, complex chronic diseases are receiving preventative health cares by way of chronic disease management, and ensure any acute referrals or requests are booked and attended. The care coordination service assists our patients to navigate the complexities that is our health care system. Essentially, the care coordination is responsible for facilitating the collaboration of all multidisciplinary health services.

    Allied Health Services

Our Primary Health Care team includes a permanent Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist, both dedicated to flexible, patient-centred care.

We prioritise seeing patients in environments where they feel safe and comfortable, whether at the clinic, their dialysis centre, or in the community.

    Transplant Support

The transplant journey can be long and complex, but a succesful kidney transplant offers the possibility of a different life. One with more freedom and fewer restrictions.
