Meet Nat and Yassie, one of our Mother/Daughter duos at the Purple House! To celebrate Mother’s Day, we asked them a few questions…

What’s your favourite thing about working with your mum?

Nat (daughter): It’s brought us closer! When I need help or when I’m bored I can just go for a yarn with her. We go on lunch dates. If I need a hand with something, our teams help each other out.

Have you had any funny moments together at work?

Yassie (mother): Seeing the faces of staff members when they realise we are mother and daughter.

Do you ever forget you’re at work because you’re family?

Nat: Everyone at Purple House feels like family, so no.

How has working together made your bond even stronger?

Nat: I feel like she has a different respect for me. She will come and ask me questions now rather than the other way around.

Yassie: It has allowed me to see my daughter as an individual, not just my child. I see her in a whole new light.

What’s something you’ve learned from each other through working together?

Nat: Mum has always been a teacher but I’ve learned that she can also learn. You never stop learning and growing.

Yassie: She has taught me a lot of patience and how to use chatGPT.

What advice would you give to other mothers and daughters who might one day work together?

Yassie: Don’t be scared to give it a go. You find out things about each other you would have never seen just in personal life. It’s been a real pleasure working with my daughter and we have Purple House to thank for giving us that opportunity and supporting us.

What does celebrating Mother’s Day together at work mean to you?

Nat: All the mums at work take you under their wing and look out for you as if you’re their child. It’s about showing all the mums that they are loved and appreciated.

Yassie: It’s about showing appreciation to all the women that love and care and respect you. As Aboriginal people, we say Happy Mother’s Day to all the strong women in our life, not just our mothers.
